Jeff Bell’s “The Wedge Room” Opens May 6th!

Opening Reception: May 6, 6-9pm
Exhibition Dates: May 6-28, 2011

THE WEDGE ROOM
” My primary interest is in functionality. My work is made up of dismantled functional objects. I rely on the shapes, materials and colors of preexisting items to form new less-definable hybrid sculptures. Another core interest of mine is the way functional objects are displayed in historic settings and museums. The loss of function that occurs when furniture and machines are displayed and therefore no longer used is fascinating to me. This project embraces these concepts in a satire of those spaces.” -Jeff Bell

Jennifer Bueno’s “Remotely Viewing” opens next Friday at the VAE ANNEX!

Opening Reception: April 1, 6-9pm
Exhibition Dates: April 1-30, 2011

Artist’s Statement: “I began this body of work by pouring through satellite images of the earth and space, intrigued by what I saw as a beautiful expansive view of the world. I did not want to attempt to recreate these exquisite images.  Rather, I wanted to understand what drew me to them.  While visiting websites like Nasa’s Earth Observatory, I was constantly reminded of technology and I found myself having affection for satellites like EOS or LANDSAT. I suppose this is just another way of understanding, a way to link my human experience to something I consider to be almost alien. Some of these satellite images evoke an out of body feeling similar to a kind of ‘spirit projection.’ For me, these images form a distance in time between myself and the world that I see. They create a magical change, an awakening. It is our home becoming something else. How is it that these images gathered and created by scientific instruments can create such an odd sense of knowing?”
